We're still trying to "Find Ourselves" Soon as we do we'll let you in on it. Come back soon!! |
It was about 2003 that Paul contacted Gary to play at a local function called the Odessa Brand New Opry. He and Gary had played together while in high school in the 60’s in a band they had formed called The Prophets (more on this in the bios section). Although Gary hadn’t played in a very long time the idea appealed to him and he and Paul were back together again. After several Brand New Opry gigs, the two of them decided to form an oldies rock and roll band. They went and listened to other bands in the area and realized that no one was playing the music of their generation. Most of what they heard was from the late 70’ s and up. So they figured why not bring out some of the old doo-wop stuff and see what happens, since that was the music that they had grown up on and what they both knew best. In summer of 2003, Renny was asked if he might be interested in joining up with Paul and Gary to play drums for the yet named group. A few years earlier, Renny and Paul had met at church where they had been part of a Christian music group called Fortress. He too, had been out of the music scene for a while and was delighted not only to be playing with his old friend Paul but also, just to be playing music again. One day during practice the three were trying to come up with a name for the group. As usual, the conversation went from what aches and pains each was having and to who had been to the doctor and what medications had been prescribed since last practice. Well, Paul looked up and said, “You know we’re nothing but a bunch of old geezers!” That was that. They settled on The Geezerz for the name of the band. Later in 2004 the band was in need of a bass player. Gary got in touch with his old pal James “Bubba” Butler whom he had taught to play bass back in the 70’s. Bubba fit right in with his musical and harmony talents. And, as luck would have it, he was an old geezer as well, with his own set of aches and pains. Most of the songs The Geezerz play will only be heard on the Oldies radio stations. In fact the compliment they get the most is that you can close your eyes and you’d swear you were listening to a record. That’s what these guys try to do. They try to capture the essence of the music of a simpler time. They try to copy the music as close to the original vinyl 45 or 33 rpm you have stashed away in your closet. Amazingly enough they do a heck of a fine job of it. So if you see a bunch of old guys wearing Hawaiian Flower-dy shirts limping around on a stage and you know you’re not at a Stones concert, you just may be in for a treat. You might be listening to The Geezerz! |
